How the scam works - an example
Victims of this scam typically find fake sports merchandise through a social media ad or a quick web search. These online scam stores have great photos and cheap prices, making them look believable.
Victims report that, at first, the purchase seems normal. The site charges their credit card and sends a confirmation email. However, weeks pass, and the jersey never arrives. The anticipation of having a keepsake of a favorite team is suddenly dashed when the victim tries to contact customer service.  They quickly find that neither the company nor the product exists.
In a recent BBB Scam Tracker report, one fan reported, "After seeing a seemingly legit Instagram account/store selling licensed sports apparel, I bought two University of Wyoming hoodie sweatshirts. After three months I still had not received my products, I sent an email to their supposed support email requesting an update or my money back. They proceeded to say I can't get a refund until I receive and then return my item(s), to which I began to get frustrated since I can't return something I never received. After ten emails back and forth, I am only receiving automated responses at this point."
